Scorpio: personality traits and character

Scorpio, the most intense and mysterious of all the signs.

Scorpio is the emo of the zodiac gang. It’s the quiet rebel, who doesn’t say much but is very well aware of all that is happening in the group.

Scorpio is perceptive. Scorpio is into deep stuff, like all that is taboo, controversial, or occult.

Or at least that’s what the reputation of Scorpio says. But is that true?

Of have we been sold a lie all along?! / insert dramatic music /

Dear Scorpios among us, how do you feel about it?

In this post I’ll break down what is Scorpio astrologically speaking to see if they really fit with this deep, secretive and mysterious archetype.

I've also made a video of that post, so if you're more in the mood to watch rather than read, here you are:

Understanding the Zodiac Sign of Scorpio

It’s very easy. All zodiac signs are “composed” of 3 fundamental things: their element, mode and ruling planet.

Of course, there are other stuff and layers, it’s astrology, it’s a real rabbit hole. But those 3 things are the core.

So the plan is to go through those 3 key things for the sign of Scorpio, and see if they make sense with its reputation.

And if you want to get more familiar with those 3 things and with astrology in general, I’ve made an astrology guide to reading your birth chart with ease and fun, that you can download for free.

I've even included a birth chart reading demonstration of Emma Watson in it XD

Okay, back to Scorpio.

1. The Element: Water

There are 4 elements in astrology: fire, earth, air and water.

Scorpio is a water sign, like Cancer and Pisces. Water signs are all about emotions and bonding. It’s much like real water, it wants to stretch all over.

It’s like, you knock your mug down and the water is, “yeah, let’s be friends with the table and next with the floor and next with your socks.” Great.

Water always wants to include more. Water is flexible, it simply takes the shape of whatever it’s in. It has this reflective quality.

That’s why water signs have the reputation of being compassionate. They’re usually good at sensing the mood, and their natural instinct is to sooth. Water’s natural state is to be smooth, not like fire or air that naturally have movement in them.

So, what do you think? Does the element of water fit with the reputation of Scorpio?

Aha, before you give me your answer, let’s first check the mode.

2. The Mode: Fixed

There are 3 modes in astrology: cardinal, fixed and mutable.

And Scorpio is of the fixed mode. A sign of the fixed mode is exactly like the word says, they are fix. They’re solid, they won’t budge.

Signs of the fixed mode are the ones that are in the middle of a season, so they have this quality of being unchanging. They are this pure, everlasting essence.

Scorpio is pure fall.

Fixed signs maintain and try to widen to everything their quality.

We’re starting to sense a bit more the reputation of Scorpio here. Their intensity comes from their fixed mode.

And they’re secretive and mysterious because all this intensity expresses itself through water. So through all the inner world of emotions, feelings and the desire for connection.

But, what really gives to Scorpio their reputation of the rebel, the loner, the alternative and brooding one is their ruling planet: Mars.

3. The Ruling Planet: Mars

I’m more of a traditional astrologer, so even though I believe that Pluto is important, for me Mars is the ruler of Scorpio.

Mars is the god or goddess of war. Mars is heat, it’s red, it’s blood, it’s fight. It’s also standing up for yourself. It’s conflict rather than staying silent in the face of injustice.

Mars is disruptive, for the better or the worse.

And there you have it! Mars explains all for Scorpio.

Because Scorpio has this nearly impossible task of being water, emotions and bonding, AND fighting and cutting with Mars.

Plus Scorpio has to cut, Mars, in other to bond, water, but while staying still, because it’s a fixed sign.

That’s so hard, man.

4. A Conclusion, sort of

And that’s why Scorpio has this reputation of being kind of mysterious, or different or standing out.

They draw you out of the usual relations by taking you to this still, quiet place near a pond. That combination of water and fixed really has a magnetic quality to it.

You see yourself reflected in the water of Scorpio because it’s so still. Even though Scorpio doesn’t say a word, you have a feeling that they get you on a deep, deep level.

With Mars, Scorpio cut through all the superficial stuff. They go to the gut level.

With Mars, Scorpio is not afraid of your dark and not so pretty secrets. They won’t sugar coat their thoughts and ideas.

Scorpio has the reputation of loving the esoteric or taboo because they naturally go deep into stuff (fixed) and especially into the controversial stuff (Mars).

That combo of getting others because they’re a water sign, but also not caring that much about others because they’re ruled by Mars, is really something that stands out and intrigues.

Scorpio really contrasts with the other water signs, Cancer and Pisces, which are ruled by the more optimistic and “bright” planets of the Moon and Jupiter.

Like, Cancer is the friend who will bring you your favorite meal to cheer you up. Pisces will give you a pep talk and remind you how awesome you are.

But Scorpio is the one who’ll just silently stay with you through the night and the tears, haha.

Scorpios have the reputation of being very loyal because they are fixed water, and also because Mars, once it has a cause, once it has found its friends, will fight for them until the end.

5. The End

Voila, that was your short and sweet intro to the sign of Scorpio.

Once you get the meaning of water, of the fixed mode and of Mars, you can understand all of the different expressions of Scorpio.

Because, of course, water is about bonding, but not everyone bonds the same way. Mars is about being disruptive, but not everyone is disruptive in the same way.

So there are all those nuances that explain why all Scorpios can be pretty different, but at the same time it’s still that core archetype of Scorpio that is being expressed.

And of course there’s also the individual’s birth chart that will explain why the archetype of Scorpio works in this or that way in the person’s life.

Like, if you have Venus in Scorpio, Venus will influence the manifestation of Scorpio with its peaceful and merry vibe.

And if you’d like to explore how the zodiac manifests itself in your personality and life, I offer birth chart readings.

You can also download my astrology guide if you’re a true Scorpio that prefers to do the work by yourself.

Thanks for reading! As a good-bye gift, here's a little summary of Scorpio.

I hope you have a lovely day.
